Dear Editor,

I am writing to express my thoughts on the Conservatives’ plans to overturn the current ban on hunting.

David Cameron is a keen huntsman himself and is even known as “one shot Dave”. He partakes in the “sport” on his wife’s step-father’s Scottish estate on the island of Jura, and can kill two stag with one bullet.

If the hunting ban is revoked, wild animals will be subjected to extreme cruelty from hunters with their dogs.

Before the ban, stags were chased for their antlers which hunters used as trophies. Hinds (and often their calves) are also chased by the dogs but have less stamina than the males so often more than one is killed in one day.

The retraction of the hunting ban would also see the return of fox hunting. One website reports that neither the Minister of Agriculture nor the National Farmers’ Union see the fox to be a significant threat to agriculture. Yet before the ban, hunts claimed they were controlling numbers of foxes and declared that they were pests.

Foxes were chased by dogs and once caught after a long chase, suffered a series of bites and tears before death. The foxes’ carcasses were then fed to the hounds and the blood of the fox smeared onto the face of hunt supporters who had just seen their first kill (usually children).

Aside from the obvious cruelty of hunting, for people who don’t perceive it to be a problem, the cost both in terms of physical effects and monetary issues is huge. In an average hunting season, over 15,000 foxes are killed, three humans are killed accidentally, 6,000 hounds and pups are killed, veterinary fees for the horses amount to £15million and policing costs, paid for by the tax payer, amount to over £1million.

I will not be choosing to vote Conservative in the next general election and I hope that after reading the facts above, pro-Conservative readers will re-think their decisions to vote the Tories into power. Anybody wishing to learn more about the Conservatives’ plans, visit www.facct.org.uk.

Yours Faithfully,

(Your name).
